A colorist is someone who uses intense colors in paintings, making it the dominant feature in the piece. Using this approach, we will cover both landscape painting and color theory. Using bright, expressive acrylic palettes, students will create their own paintings. 


Includes five sessions. Supplies not included.

Saturday, February 24

Discover tools, techniques, and methods needed for creating expressive and vibrant pastel drawings. Students will learn to blend and layer to achieve accurate volume and color, and use mark-making to express movement and feeling. Beginners welcome. 


Supplies not included. *Please bring a sack lunch to eat during a short class intermission. 


Impressionist Pastels 

Held at the Cedarburg Cultural Center

Tuesdays, February 27, March 13, 20, 27 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Learn how to accentuate vibrant colors, interesting contrasts, and expressive palettes in pastel. This class is all about technique and how to create a strong piece of art. Focusing on the impressionistic tradition, we will discuss optical mixing, quick work habits, and color sensitivity. Beginners welcome.  Supply List available online.

Drawing from Photos

Tuesdays, April 3, 10, 17, 24 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Learn how your favorite photos and images can translate into sensitive and powerful drawings.  We will cover a brief introduction on drawing and then focus on how to translate photographs using drawing techniques and tools.  Perfect for beginners or those looking for a new perspective.  Supply List available online.

Thursdays, April 26 – May 17

Abstraction is a fun and unique way to work with watercolors. Students will delve into experimental techniques that respond to the patterns, colors, and textures of the medium. We will discuss composition and expressing oneself through the flow of water. All levels of experience welcome!

Twenty Paintings Workshop

Cedar Valley Retreat Center

Friday, May 18- Sunday may 20th (9am-4pm each day)

In this stimulating class you will paint the same subject “twenty” times. You will learn experimentation and will be challenged to find ways to rediscover the subject. The uses of acrylic paint will be covered as part of the journey. You will discuss topics such as color, value, style, method and more! It will force you to explore your technique. Overnighters $290 includes workshop, two nights lodging and all meals. Commuters $120 includes workshop and daily lunch. (Supply list will be provided at time of registration.)
